Dolphins are regarded as the friendliest creatures in the sea and stories of them helping drowning sailors have been common since Roman times. The more we learn about dolphins, the more we realize that their society is more complex than people previously imagined. They look after other dolphins when they are ill, care for pregnant mothers and protect the weakest in the community, as we do. Some scientists have suggested that dolphins have a language but it is much more probable that they communicate with each other without needing words. Could any of these mammals be more intelligent than man? Certainly the most common argument in favor of man's superiority over them that we can kill them more easily than they can kill us is the least satisfactory. On the contrary, the more we discover about these remarkable creatures, the less we appear superior when we destroy them.

TASK 2 - ARTICLE REVIEW

JOURNAL: LANGUAGE LEARNING AND TECHNOLOGY FEBRUARY 2010, VOLUME 14,                       NUMBER 1 PP. 65-86
AUTHORS: PAULA WINKE, SUSAN GASS, TETYANA SYDORENKO

This research is concerned with the effects of video captioning in foreign language listening activities. It is believed that L2 listening and comprehension skills can be improved through the usage of audiovisual materials that are enhanced with captions. It helps learners to visualize what they hear particularly the input that is beyond their linguistic ability or in other words it helps learners to connect auditory to visual input regardless of their language proficiency. The participants chosen are the foreign language learners from a large Midwestern university in the United States. The one hundred fifty participants are mixed from four different native languages that are Spanish, Russian, Arabic, and Chinese. The number of participants across languages is not balanced because this study relies on volunteers as the subjects. There are all four materials used for this study- videos, vocabulary tests, test of prior knowledge of key vocabulary and comprehension tests. The videos are taken from three short English-language documentaries about three animals- salmon, bears, and dolphins. The vocabulary test is divided into two- one in written form and the other one in audio form. The test of prior knowledge of key vocabulary is used to identify the knowledge the learners have prior to watching the videos. They have to respond to the scale given for each key word presented to them. the comprehension tests is in English. It consists of multiple choice questions the participants need to answer prior to their knowledge gained from the documentaries they watch. For the procedure, the participants are first required to fill in a background questionnaire followed by a presentation explaining the tasks they are about to do next. Then, they are to watch the three documentaries in which each video is shown two times, one without caption and the other is with caption. The first finding based on the first research question shows that captioned videos aid in vocabulary recognition and overall comprehension which is supported by a previous research that multiple input results in better recognition. The second finding shows that there is an effect of the order of viewing on the following recognition of vocabulary presented in aural mode. Participants who viewed the videos with captions first were better to aurally recognize novel vocabulary than those who viewed the videos later. The third finding tells that the orthographic differences between participants do have an effect on the result of the study. The results are compared between the Russian and Spanish and Arabic and Chinese where those who have a background knowledge on the orthographic pattern of the language and their native language scored better than those who do not. The final finding shows that proficiency differences do not affect the result of the research thus brings this research to a notion that captioning functions similarly to all proficiency level.

This research does interest me as it provides me an idea on how to improve my English proficiency apart from having an insight to improve my students’ proficiency later in the future. The whole part of the study is somehow can be related to my own experience while watching movies with captions where I’m aware of the vocabularies used in the movies including the way they are pronounced by then native speakers of the language. All in all, this research is well conducted as the researchers do take the orthographic factor of the Arabs and the Chinese into account. It is well organized and none has seemed to confuse the participants in participating in the research. It is highly suggested and appreciated if this study were to be done in the Malaysian context. This is because most of the ESL learners do watch movies in English but with Malay subtitles which is seemed to jeopardize their learning stage of the language. It can be seen clearly in cinemas where viewers are presented with Malay subtitles instead of English. This study might be helpful in increasing the awareness of the Malaysian ESL learners to be better in recognizing the vocabularies of the second language while watching movies or other videos as well.

www.eslpartyland.com

1   1. This website helps ESL teachers to be more creative instead of having normal and repeated exercises or lesson plans in classroom, in other words-being a better teacher.  It also helps those who would like to learn or strengthen their knowledge in the English language by providing English lessons. The learning and teaching sections are differentiate throughout two different colours- blue is for learning while red is for teaching. There are a lot of exercises included in the website which cover from all the four skills integrated in the English language plus exercises which require both teachers and learners to play with the internet, videos, as well as music in their lesson. There is no column for immediate feedback but this website provides the visitor to give comments or asks questions by joining them through facebook and twitter. There are different levels of difficulty for different level of proficiency provided both in the lesson plans and the quizzes.

2.   2.  In order to access to the whole content of the website, visitors should choose either to teach or to learn. In other words, the visitors of this website can be both learners and teachers of the second language. Learning content can be identified through the blue colour while red is used to identify teaching content. The layout of this website is very simple yet captivating throughout its choice of colours and the way it is organized. Learners or visitors would not have to worry about having trouble to download the contents or the materials provided since they are permissible to download or copy the whole thing in it. There is even an instruction of saying “Press CTRL+P to print the lesson plan”.

3.   3. Going through this website does not remind me of anything that I have learned before in the English classroom while I was in school. During my time in school, it was really exam-oriented and there was no fun in learning the language as compared to what is presented in this website that looks so cool and creative. Having activities with my friends in learning English has not happened since I’m used to study alone. I rarely use English to have discussion with my friends but English seems to be my first language at my workplace. Thus, this leaves me no option to say that I have never ventured in any of the activities with either my friends or my teacher. However, if it is about self-study, I do learn something by watching movies such as the grammatical factors, pronunciation, intonation etc.

4.   4.  Yes it does. And surprisingly, I am interested to know more about it once I have gone through the website. The first part that caught my attentions is learning with the videos which are called as ENGLEO (English Video Lessons for Learners and Teachers). It does not only teach you about how to speak or listen, but it also provides lessons for those who are not interested in reading books to learn English.    In the movie lessons, students are to watch a movie and there will be some exercises to be done within the three stages namely pre, while, and post. Though it is said that some of the movies suggested are not suitable for those of the lower level of proficiency but teachers should know best to select which movie to serve their students with.

5.  5. One of the theories that can be associated with this website is the Zone Proximal Development by Vygotsky. Scaffolding or assistance is the focus of this theory in which students are being assisted by their teacher or more capable peers in learning. It can be said this website assists its visitors to become better learners throughout the learner’s section and assists teachers to become better teachers through the teacher’s section. The other theory that can be related to this application is constructivism. Teachers as well as students are to construct new knowledge based on the schema that they already have. The already-established knowledge are combined with the knowledge that they find in the website to improve their second language teaching and learning.

6.  6. As for the underlying   four aspects of the English language learning- listening, speaking, reading and writing, yes, this website is potential in language learning. It has all the aspects covered with a variety of source of activities to be done with the students. It helps teachers to be creative in teaching their students the language that might sound alien to them. All the worksheets have been provided and teachers just need to press CTRL+P to print them. The videos are already linked and all the visitors or learners need to do is just click and watch.

7.  7.  Yes, I would love to. World nowadays is changing rapidly and everyone has the access to the internet, everyone, including small kids. This rapid change has somehow affected the education system in which teachers are forced to be one step ahead of their students in order to grasp their attention in learning. Students of nowadays world are more interested in IT instead of the old school way of learning, language specifically. Conducting lessons using the old way is no longer an option for teachers as students will be bored to tears in classroom. However, combining both old school and the hi-tech way of teaching and learning can be the best way to cater the students’ need. Teachers are also required to improve themselves for the betterment of the education system. For this purpose, teachers should get out of the box to face the realm of nowadays world. This website is essential in helping ESL teachers to conduct better lesson plans in classrooms. Despite of having the computer assisted learning aspect, this website is helpful in creating a livelier environment of a classroom throughout the activities and games provided.

MY FIRST TSL641 CLASS

My name is Muhammad Zamir Bin Zulkifli. I was born on the 9th of October 1991.

Am not really good at stuffs related to computer or IT generally.
Not illiterate but just not really good at it, not really into IT thingy.

Honestly, i don"t know much about software but i think i don't have any problem using basic microsoft office software.

Yes, I did and it was around last semester if I'm not mistaken, using i-learn and padlet.

No, I did not. I prefer the old-school way of learning and teaching personally. Well, the school i went to for my practicum was located in a rural area I might say thus leading me to less favor to conduct my lesson through the use of the net. Some of the reasons might be the kids might escape from the class on their way to the lab and time consuming.

It's a good way to start exposing the language to the students in a more comfortable way rather to force them to initiate the language themselves in class.

I really hope that this course wouldn't be as creepy as it sounds to me.

The ESL Learners' Use of Critical Reading Strategies. The reason for me to choose this topic is because during my practicum period, students were having difficulties in reading, as in comprehending the text given to them. This study is intended to look at how they perceive a particular text given to them based on the critical reading strategies in the second language learning.
My supervisor is Madam Hamidah. For now, i still don't get any feedback from her about my proposal though i've met her once while buying my lunch and she said she was busy with the papers since it was at the end of the semester. I had texted her before that and she apologize for not replying my text. I'll try to reach her again asap in this period and hopefully she'll be free to meet me up anytime soon.
